Do podcast transcripts help SEO

A podcast transcript earns search traffic only on a page your own domain serves. Apple, Spotify and YouTube each make one, and none of them is yours.

A podcast transcript helps search only when it sits on a page your own domain serves. Apple, Spotify and YouTube each generate one automatically, and every one of those copies earns the traffic for Apple, Spotify or YouTube. The transcript was never the scarce part. The page is.

A podcast transcript is the spoken audio written out as text, timed to the audio or set as one block beneath it. Three major platforms now produce one without being asked. None of them produces a URL you control.

Three platforms make the transcript. None makes the page.

Where should a podcast transcript be published?

Eight business podcasts in 23 link episodes to their own site

On an episode page on your own domain, one page per episode, carrying the player and the text together. Most business podcasts have no such page. About four in ten send every episode to their podcast host’s website, and a quarter attach no episode link at all.

The link in the feed is what a podcast app displays, what a listener taps and what a crawler follows. Point it at a hosting platform and the episode’s words accumulate authority for the hosting platform.

Two shows attach a transcript to every recent episode. One of them also gives every episode a page it owns. The transcript is the part everyone buys, and the page is the part almost nobody has.

Do you need to pay for podcast transcription?

No. Apple generates one for every new episode shortly after it publishes. Spotify generates one for some shows and lets the creator switch it on or off for a single episode or the whole feed. YouTube captions long-form videos and Shorts in more than a hundred languages, so a show that publishes video has a third copy without asking.

Platform Who makes the transcript Where the text sits
Apple Podcasts Apple, automatically Inside the Apple Podcasts app
Spotify Spotify, for some shows Inside Spotify
YouTube YouTube, as captions On the YouTube watch page
Your own site You On your domain

Each of those copies does a real job. A listener reads along and searches back for the moment they half remember. What none of them does is put a crawlable page of your words on a domain you own, and that is the only version a search result can send anyone to.

Supplying your own transcript through the feed changes which text the apps display. It does not change whose domain it sits on.

What should a podcast episode page contain?

The player, the full transcript in the page source, chapter timestamps and structured data describing the episode. Acquired publishes each episode on acquired.fm with the whole conversation as text on the page, chapter markers through it, and a PodcastEpisode block telling a crawler what the page is.

Spoken language runs long and circles back. A page that is nothing but raw transcript asks a reader to work through an hour of talk for one answer, so the transcript sits under a short written summary and a set of chapters someone can jump from. The text is there to be found. The structure is there to be read.

An episode page also needs a reason to exist beyond ranking. It is the link the guest shares, and it still resolves after the show goes quiet. A page on a hosting platform stops resolving when the account does.

Do podcast hosts give you an episode page?

Yes, and the ones most business shows use will serve it from a domain you own. Transistor builds a landing page for every episode and lets you configure a custom domain for the site. Buzzsprout points its website at a custom domain through a CNAME record. The setting exists, it is off by default, and the default is what most shows keep.

That one setting decides whether years of published conversation compound on your domain or on a vendor’s, and it is cheaper to switch on before episode one than to migrate three hundred episodes later.

What to fix on a podcast website

Five changes, in the order that decides where the words land
  1. Turn on the custom domain. Most hosts include it. Until it is on, every episode page is building a stranger’s site.
  2. Give each episode its own URL. One blog page listing all episodes ranks for the show’s name and nothing else. A page per episode ranks for what that episode was about, which compounds with every episode published after it.
  3. Put the transcript in the page source. Text loaded by script after the page renders is text a crawler may never see. View the page source and search for a sentence from the middle of the conversation.
  4. Attach the transcript to the feed. Apple ingests a transcript supplied through RSS and shows yours instead of the machine-written one, which matters for names, products and numbers that automatic transcription gets wrong.
  5. Decide what the page is for before measuring it. Search traffic to an episode page is slow and cumulative, and judging it in month three kills it. Set the benchmark alongside the rest of the show’s numbers, in advance.

Run the check on your own feed first. Open the RSS, find the <link> on the most recent episode, and see whose domain it points at. Whatever the answer, it is the page every episode you publish from now on will be feeding.

Frequently asked questions

Do podcast transcripts help SEO?
Only on a page your own domain serves. A transcript inside Apple Podcasts, Spotify or a hosting platform’s website builds search authority for that platform. The same text on an episode page on your domain is what a search engine can rank and send a reader to.
Does Apple Podcasts create transcripts automatically?
Yes. Apple generates a transcript for each new episode shortly after it is published, and works through older episodes over time. The feature arrived with iOS 17.4 in March 2024 and covers a growing list of languages.
Can you upload your own podcast transcript?
Yes. Apple ingests a transcript supplied through the RSS feed and displays it in place of the automatic one. Spotify lets a creator turn auto-generated transcripts on or off per episode or for the whole show, and enabling them replaces an uploaded file.
Does a transcript on my podcast host’s website help my site?
No. The page sits on the host’s domain. Links to it, and any ranking it earns, count for the host. Pointing the host’s website at your own custom domain moves that value across without changing anything about how the show is published.
What is the podcast:transcript tag?
It is the RSS element that tells podcast apps where to find an episode’s transcript file, in formats including plain text, VTT, SRT, HTML and JSON. Apple reads it from the feed. Most podcast hosts add it when a transcript is uploaded.
Does every episode need a transcript?
Every episode needs a page. The transcript is what gives that page enough specific language to match a specific search, so a show with a page per episode gets more from transcribing all of them than a show with one archive page gets from transcribing any.
Does YouTube give you a podcast transcript?
YouTube produces automatic captions for long-form videos and Shorts in more than a hundred languages, and viewers can open them as a transcript on the watch page. That text lives on YouTube. Publishing a video version does not put a transcript on your site.
Should the transcript sit on the same page as the audio player?
Yes. One URL per episode holding the player, the summary, the chapters and the transcript concentrates every link and every search match on one page. Splitting the transcript onto a second page divides both.

Feed data

Episode links and transcript declarations were read directly from each show’s RSS feed on 23 September 2026, across the twenty-three business podcasts in the measured set that had published within the previous sixty days. “Episode page” is the destination of the <link> element on each of the last twenty items, classified as the show’s own domain, a podcast host’s domain, or absent. “Transcript in the feed” counts <podcast:transcript> elements across the same twenty items.
