Who should host a company podcast

A company podcast needs an executive who will hold the slot for years, or a hired journalist. HubSpot uses its CMO; BCG and Schwab hire outside hosts.

A company podcast should be hosted by someone who will still be in the chair in three years: a senior executive the buyers want to hear, or a hired interviewer who puts the company’s experts in the guest seat. Choose for what the episodes are made of. Then build the show to outlive its host.

A company podcast host runs every conversation on a show the company pays for. They choose the questions, set the pace and are the name a guest agrees to sit down with. The person who takes it on is giving up a few hours of every week, for years.

Six shows changed host and kept going. Four stopped with the host in place

Who hosts the company podcasts that last?

All three kinds of host run company podcasts that are still publishing, and all three have run shows that stopped. The choice decides what the show sounds like and whose week it costs. It does not decide whether the show survives.

Who hosts Still publishing Stopped What the show depends on
A senior executive Marketing Against The Grain (HubSpot), Inside Trader Joe’s, Attributed (Dreamdata), Topline (Pavilion) Seeking Wisdom (Drift), The Logan Bartlett Show (Redpoint Ventures), Let’s Talk ABM (strategicabm) One person protecting the slot against the rest of their calendar
An employee below the executive level Search Off the Record (Google), Technology Now (Hewlett Packard Enterprise), What It Means (Forrester) Demand Gen Chat (Chili Piper), The Customer Engagement Lab (PandaDoc), Out Travel The System (Expedia) Hosting written into the job description
A hired journalist or outside expert The So What from BCG, Choiceology (Charles Schwab), Tell Me What Happened (OnStar), NVIDIA AI Podcast, Tomorrow’s Cure (Mayo Clinic) Command Line Heroes (Red Hat), Duolingo Spanish Podcast, Around the Barrel (Jack Daniel’s) The contract being renewed

Each kind of host fails in its own way, and that failure is the thing to plan around. An executive gets busy. A staff host’s show slips behind the rest of the job. A contract comes up for renewal in a year when the budget is tight.

Should the CEO host the company podcast?

HubSpot's CMO has held about 100 episodes a year

Yes, if the buyers want access to that executive and the executive will hold a weekly slot for years. No, if the calendar will win. The test is whether recording is the meeting that never gets moved.

The executive shows that last treat the podcast as part of the job. HubSpot’s CMO and its SVP of marketing have hosted Marketing Against The Grain since 2022, at close to two episodes a week. Inside Trader Joe’s, publishing since 2018, was hosted by the chain’s president of stores and its marketing director in 2020, and by two of its vice presidents in 2025. Dreamdata’s co-founder and CMO leads Attributed every week. In each case the executive’s point of view is the product, and no one else could host it.

The executive shows that stopped did not stop because the executive left. David Cancel was still at Drift, as executive chairman, after Seeking Wisdom’s last episode in September 2021. Logan Bartlett is still a managing director at Redpoint Ventures, and his show’s feed has carried nothing since September 2025. strategicabm still lists Let’s Talk ABM’s host as its CMO. The executive stays. The slot goes.

Should you hire a professional podcast host?

Hire one when the company’s experts are the content but none of them should be running the conversation. The interviewer becomes the constant and the experts rotate through the guest chair, which is how a firm full of specialists makes a weekly show without asking any one of them for a weekly slot.

BCG hires the journalist Georgie Frost to interview its consultants on The So What. Charles Schwab’s Choiceology is hosted by the Wharton behavioural scientist Katy Milkman. OnStar’s Tell Me What Happened is hosted by a national science columnist from Canadian public radio, and Mayo Clinic’s Tomorrow’s Cure by journalists. None of these hosts works for the company. All of these shows are still publishing.

An outside host is also the easiest kind to replace. Choiceology moved from Dan Heath to Katy Milkman after its first season. Tomorrow’s Cure brought in a new host for its fifth. The risk sits elsewhere. A hired host’s contract is a decision the company takes again at every renewal, and Red Hat’s Command Line Heroes ended after nine seasons with its only host still in place.

Can an employee host the company podcast?

Yes, when hosting is written into the job. Google’s Search Off the Record is hosted by the Search Relations team, whose work is explaining Google Search to site owners, so every episode is that job done out loud. Technology Now is run by Hewlett Packard Enterprise’s head of audio. Neither show is anybody’s side project.

The staff shows that stopped look different. Demand Gen Chat stopped in September 2023. A month later its host was still Chili Piper’s head of demand generation, introduced as the show’s host on someone else’s podcast. The host had not gone anywhere. The show had.

The fix costs nothing but a decision. If a marketer is going to host, the hours come out of something else in their role, by name, before the first episode.

What happens to a company podcast when the host leaves?

Usually the company finds another host and the show carries on. Many of the longest-running company podcasts have changed host at least once, and several have switched between an executive, an employee and an outsider.

Show How the host changed Still publishing
Shopify Masters Felix Thea, then Shopify content marketer Shuang Esther Shan, then Adam Levinter and others Yes
Goldman Sachs Exchanges The firm’s head of global communications, then a senior strategist from its research division Yes
The Stack Overflow Podcast The company’s founders, then staff from its content team Yes
The a16z Show Its editor in chief, then Steph Smith, then general partner Erik Torenberg Yes
Choiceology Author Dan Heath, then behavioural scientist Katy Milkman Yes
NVIDIA AI Podcast Journalist Michael Copeland, then Noah Kravitz, a contractor Yes
The Growth Hub Edward Ford, then two strategists from the agency Three more years

The endings point the same way. Several of the internally hosted company shows that stopped did so with the host still at the company. Losing a host is a staffing problem with a known fix. Losing the company’s interest is how a show actually ends.

How to choose a host for a company podcast

Let the episodes pick the host, then plan for the host leaving

Start from what an episode is made of, and let that pick the host.

  1. Name the source of the episodes. If every episode is one person’s point of view, as at HubSpot, that person hosts. If the episodes come from many experts, customers or outside guests, as at Goldman Sachs, BCG and Shopify, the host is an interviewer.
  2. Ask the executive for a year of the slot. One recording a week, protected in the calendar, for twelve months. If they hesitate now, they will cancel later. Give them the guest chair instead.
  3. If the host is on staff, rewrite their job. Put hosting in the role and take named work out of it. A show added on top of a full job is the first thing that slips.
  4. If the host is hired, plan the renewal on day one. Agree what the show has to show by the renewal date before the first episode records, so the contract is not decided in a budget meeting by someone who has never heard it.
  5. Keep the host’s name off the title. A show named after its host cannot change host. The ones that changed hosts and kept going are named for their subject.

Frequently asked questions

Should the CEO host the company podcast?
Only if buyers want to hear from the CEO directly and the CEO will protect one recording slot a week for at least a year. If either is missing, hire an interviewer and make the CEO a recurring guest.
Can a company hire someone to host its podcast?
Yes. BCG, Charles Schwab, OnStar and Mayo Clinic all hire journalists or outside experts to host their podcasts, and all of those shows are still publishing. The hired host interviews the company’s own experts, which keeps the company’s knowledge at the centre without taking an executive’s week.
What happens to a podcast when the host leaves the company?
Most company podcasts that lose a host find another and keep publishing. Shopify Masters, Goldman Sachs Exchanges, The Stack Overflow Podcast, The a16z Show and Choiceology have all changed host. A show is far more likely to stop because the company loses interest than because its host moves on.
Can someone in the marketing team host the company podcast?
Yes, if hosting is formally part of their role and other work comes off their plate to make room. Chili Piper’s Demand Gen Chat stopped while its host was still the company’s head of demand generation.
Should a company podcast have two hosts?
Two hosts make it easier to keep a weekly schedule and to survive one of them leaving. Marketing Against The Grain, Inside Trader Joe’s and Search Off the Record are each hosted by two or more people from the company.
Should a company podcast be named after its host?
No. A show named after one person cannot change host without starting again. The company podcasts that changed host and kept publishing are named for their subject.
Do podcasts hosted by executives last longer?
No. Executive-hosted, staff-hosted and outsider-hosted company podcasts have all lasted and all stopped. The host’s job title does not separate the survivors from the rest.
Should the host be a subject expert or an interviewer?
An expert host suits a show built on one person’s point of view. An interviewer suits a show that draws on many experts, customers or guests. Most company podcasts with many contributors use an interviewer and rotate the experts as guests.
